I opened my notebook and wrote one last line beneath everything else:

Not everything that is recorded needs to be replayed.

Then I closed it.

Outside, the night settled in fully, quiet and unremarkable. Inside, I sat in the kind of silence that no longer needed to be defended. Not the silence of exclusion. Not the silence of endurance. The silence of completion.

And for the first time since that dinner, it didn’t hum at all.
