“It tastes like Grandma’s,” she said.

Marcus nodded.

Phone propped against a water glass on the kitchen counter in her apartment in Atlanta. Her fiancé sitting behind her, pretending not to listen. I thought you should know that your kindness is still going. It didn’t stop when you sat back down. It’s in my apartment every day. It’s in the food I cook. It’s in the phone calls with my daughters. But those days are the real story.

The game show was just the day the world happened to be watching.
