Elia snorted. “That sounds either feminist or deeply threatening.”

“It’s both,” I said, clinking glasses with them.

After they left, I stood alone in the kitchen rinsing plates while the last of the warm water clouded the window over the sink. The folded flag on the shelf caught the lamplight again. The necklace rested cool against my skin. The apartment smelled like lemon and dish soap and the fading remains of dinner. Ordinary. Entirely, gloriously ordinary.

I thought back to the engagement dinner with a distance that no longer felt like dissociation. I could see the whole thing now for what it had been: a test disguised as a welcome, an initiation built on humiliation, a private system revealing itself by assuming I would accept reduction as the price of inclusion. I had not.

That refusal had cost me a fiancé, a future script, a social fantasy, and months of peace.

And in the quiet after all of it—in the warm pool of lamplight, in the lived-in kitchen, in the steady life rebuilt one practical choice at a time—I finally understood the promise I made to myself on the wet sidewalk outside The Gilded Pine before the hostess even opened the door.

I would never beg for a place at any table that required me to disappear.

I never have again.
